The Carroll County 4-H Livestock Club’s Team B Cattle Working Team was awarded first place in contest 1 of the regional youth cattle-working competition April 14 in Fort Chiswell.
Team members Michael Robinson, Jeffery Vass and India Williams were to compete April 21 in the Virginia state cattle-working competition in Harrisonburg.
The livestock club’s cattle-working team A also competed and was awarded third place. Its members are Abigail Williams, Jessica Vass, and Claire Gleason. It will serve as the alternate team at state competition.
The cattle-working competition is a timed event that tests a team’s ability to process three young beef cattle for health and productivity by following Beef Quality Assurance guidelines.
Contestants must correctly maneuver cattle in a livestock handling system, and prepare and administer vaccines, deworming medicine, growth promotant implants, and insecticide ear tags.
