Alleghany golfers capture conference runner-up honors

SPARTA, N.C. – Alleghany finished second in the Mountain-Valley Conference championship golf match played April 17 at New River Country Club in Sparta.

Starmount claimed first place honors with a 151 with the Trojans finishing with 156 points.

Other teams and their scores: 3. Wilkes Central 163, 4. Elkin 167, 5. West Wilkes 178, 6. East Wilkes 180, 7. North Wilkes 183, 8. Ashe County 203.

Dylon Wooten of Alleghany was the medalist after firing a 3-under 33.

In an April 13 match, the Trojans finished first and second in a pair of Mountain-Valley Conference tournaments held at Cedarbrook Country Club in Elkin.

Starmount won the front nine tournament with a team score of 155, followed by Alleghany with a 160.

Other teams and their scores were: Wilkes Central 171, West Wilkes 177, North Wilkes 182, East Wilkes 183, Elkin 184, Ashe County 195.

Chris Fillingame of Starmount had the low score of ever par 36 while Wooten of Alleghany posted a 38.

The Trojans won the back nine tournament by 11 strokes with a team score of 148 while second place Starmount shot a 159.

Other teams were: Wilkes Central 164, Elkin 170, East Wilkes and West Wilkes 176, Ashe County 177, North Wilkes 178.

Wooten turned in the low round with a 2-under 34 while teammates Hunter Maines shot a 36 and Tanner Rutherford a 37.
