• Firefighters to sponsor BBQ
GLADE CREEK, N.C. – The Glade Creek Volunteer Fire Department will sponsor a BBQ dinner on Saturday, Feb. 23.
The dinner will be served at the Glade Creek School cafeteria from 4:30-7 p.m.
A gospel singing will also be held beginning at 6 p.m.
Proceeds will benefit the fire department.
• Black History Month celebration slated
SPARTA, N.C. – The Sparta Elementary School PTA will meet Thursday, Feb. 28 at 6 p.m. in the school cafeteria.
The 6th, 7th and 8th grade students from Mrs. Hampton’s class will perform their Black History Month celebration.
Dessert cook-off competition will also be held during the meeting.
The winner will receive a $25 prize.
Anyone can call the school office at (336) 372-8546 to sign up and enter their favorite dessert.
• Volunteers provide tax assistance
SPARTA, N.C. -- The IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA) will be available to help individuals prepare tax returns at the Alleghany Public Library in Sparta.
VITA provides free income tax preparation for low-to moderate-income taxpayers (generally those who make $51,000 and below) who need help filing their returns. VITA is staffed by IRS certified volunteers to help with tax return preparation. VITA will be available on Wednesdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. by appointment only. VITA will not be available the week of March 25.

• Relay for Life to hold kickoff event
SPARTA, N.C. - The Alleghany Relay for Life will be hosting a Kickoff on Tuesday, Feb. 26.
Those interested in finding out more about Relay for Life should visit the Alleghany Wellness Center at 5 p.m. There will be food, information and guest speakers.
This year, Relay for Life will be on July 27, and the theme is “100 Years of Hope.” If you cannot attend the kickoff but would like to participate, visit RelayforLife.org and register.
