GALAX – Two suspects were arrested Sunday in connection with the robbery of the CVS Drug Store on East Stuart Drive in Galax.
Galax Police Chief Rick Clark said his department was notified at around 3 p.m. that a man had entered the drug store and handed a note to a pharmacy technician stating they were being robbed and that he was armed. The note identified the Schedule II narcotics that he wanted.
Clark said the suspect was given the drugs and when he left the store police were notified by employees, and a witness in the parking lot told officers the direction that he had observed someone running in.
Galax officers checked the area on Stockyard Road, across the highway from the store and established a perimeter. Police Officer Trevor Jefferson then observed two people come out of the bushes and into Stockyard Road. One matched the description of the robbery suspect.
Jefferson and Police Officers Adam Newman and Bill Shaffner took the pair into custody without any resistance.
Clark said the suspects were staying in Galax and didn’t have a vehicle.
Detective JB Greer, who coordinated the investigation, obtained warrants and charged Brian Richard Sloppy, 32, of New Millport, Pa., and Renee Sue Lucas, 22, of Follansbee, W.Va., with robbery, conspiracy to commit robbery and use or attempt to use a firearm in the commission of a felony.
Galax Police Officer Jacob Vaughan and his canine, Dunja, recovered the alleged stolen drugs and evidence from the robbery in a wooded area near the CVS store.
Sloppy and Lucas are being held at the New River Valley Regional Jail in Dublin without bond pending their appearance in Galax General District Court.
