It’s bigger, safer, more efficient, and it’s the pride and joy of the Independence Volunteer Fire Department.
The department’s new fire truck recently arrived in Independence; IVFD purchased the truck from Hillsville Fire Department. The Ferrara Custom Pumper will be the new first response pumper for fires in the coverage area. This new truck will take the place of Unit 81 which has been the first response pumper since 1990.
The new truck offers us so much more with reliability, safety, and capacity, a spokesperson said. The new truck is a six man stand up cab and allows firefighters to ride safely to the fire scene. Scene lighting equipment is greatly improved and the custom center console allows for radios, lights, and other equipment to be charged and maintained in a state of readiness. Seating also allows four firefighters to be fully equipped upon arriving on a fire scene.
The purchase of the truck was made possible by the support of The Town of Independence, as well as the support of the public that the department serves.
The department will be conducting fundraisers over the next several months and the truck will be on display at these events.
