ELK CREEK -- A large crowd was on hand June 11 for the weekly drag racing at Elk Creek Dragway.
Fans got their money’s worth when the top two finishers in the Super Pro-Pro-Line, burned up the track to get the win. Wayne Horton of Hillsville came away the winner with a speed of 127.93 mph to slip by Linn Joines of Sparta, N.C., who was just a few ticks off with a speed of 127.88 mph.
Wes Sumner of Troutdale won the Footbrake class in a 1964 Ford Falcon with a speed of 83.41 mph to beat runner-up Troy Corvin of Hillsville, who turned 92.61 mph in a Chevy Nova.
Bobby Holliday of Beckley, W.Va., took the win in the DOT class with a speed of 92.25 mph in a 1971 Chevy Vega. Kevin Halsey of Independence was runner-up with a 65.79 mph in a Mercury Cougar.
Two Independence drivers squared off for the championship run in the Junior Dragster-Virginia Laser Corp. class. Jason Halsey turned a 71.41 mph to beat Brieanne Hash with a 75.90 mph.
Martin Richardson of West Jefferson, N.C., won the Motorcycle class with a 103.39 mph riding a 1982 Suzuki to beat Wes Parsons of Independence who turned 93.50 mph.
Charlie Richards Jr. of Gastonia, N.C., won round 1 of the Renegade Pro Mod Quick 8 class. He turned 154.81 in a 1963 Corvette to beat runner up Brian Shrader of Bristol, Va., also driving a 1963 Corvette with a speed of 154.33 mph.
Richards won round 2 over Shrader with his best speed of the night, 156.61 mph while Shrader had a 155.51.
In round 3, it was the same results – Richards was the winner with a speed of 155.90 while Shrader had had problems and turned only 69.86 mph.
