Local drivers claim their share of wins at Elk Creek Dragway

ELK CREEK – Local drivers took their share of wins at Elk Creek Dragway on July 9.
Linn Joines of Sparta, N.C., beat out Wayne Horton of Hillsville, to win the Super Pro-Pro-Line Performance class. Joines, driving a 2007 Racecraft dragster, turned 127.98 mph to beat Horton, also driving a dragster, with a speed of 130.62 mph.
Ronnie Brannock of Galax turned back a fired-up Woody Pack of Independence to win the Footbrake class. Brannock, driving a 1867 Chevrolet Impala, turned 82.96 mph to beat Pack, driving a 1966 Ford Mustang to a speed of 110.44 mph.
Another driver, Travis Hash of Elk Creek, won the DOT class with a speed of 80.38 mph in a 1972 Chevy Nova. Tonya Myers of Independence was runner-up in a 1995 Chevrolet Camaro with a speed of 72.67 mph.
Two Independence drivers fought it out for the Junior Dragster – Virginia Laser Corp. championship. Glenn Bobbitt took the win with a speed of 45.47 mph. to beat Tommy Miller.
In the Motorcycle class, the win went to Dale Waller of Fries, riding his Suzuki to a speed of 87.30 mph to beat Martin Richardson of West Jefferson, N.C., on a 1982 Suzuki and a speed of 101.93 mph.
Brian Shrader smoked the track in his 1963 Chevy Corvette with a speed of 150.12 mph to win the Renegade Pro Mode class over Steve Brally of Rural Retreat in a 1998 Dodge Dakota.
Scotty Jones of Wytheville won the Golf Cart, ATV, Pit Bike class with a speed of 10.901 to edge Bo Sells of Sparta, N.C., with a speed of 11.766. Both drove pit bikes.
