GALAX — A suspect involved in an altercation at a Beech Grove Lane home last week has been taken into custody by the Galax Police Department on outstanding traffic warrants, according to police reports.
David Lee Combs, 39, of 2212 Beech Grove Lane, was a suspect in an incident Nov. 14 at his residence, after Grayson County officers were called to the residence for a reported self-inflicted stab wound.
At approximately 4 p.m. that day, Grayson County deputies responded to Combs’ residence, where they found Combs’ sibling, Ricky Combs, with knife wounds to his hands.
“Upon arrival, deputies discovered that Ricky Combs Jr. had knife wounds to his hands from attempting to disarm his brother, David Lee Combs,” Vaughan said in a news release  last Thursday. “According to family members, David Combs was stabbing himself with a knife.”
When Ricky Combs attempted to grab the knife, his hands were cut severely, the sheriff said. “David ran from the residence with the knife into a wooded area.”
Deputies and troopers with the Virginia State Police searched for David Combs for several hours on Tuesday, on foot and with a state police helicopter.
Meanwhile, a medical helicopter landed at Longview United Methodist Church on Beech Grove to transport Ricky Combs for treatment.
Vaughan said family members told deputies later that David Combs had contacted them via text message stating that he was not injured, but would not give up his location.
On Thursday, Vaughan said he made contact with David Combs by cell phone. “David stated that he was not injured and would turn himself in on Friday,” the sheriff said.
Combs was wanted on outstanding warrants for traffic offenses, according to the sheriff’s office.
On Monday, the sheriff’s office confirmed that the Galax Police Department had arrested Combs at 2 a.m. Sunday morning, when they found him walking the city streets.
The arresting officer was Silverio Gonzales, according to Galax Police Chief Rick Clark.
No stab wounds were reported by Combs when he was taken to the jail, according to the sheriff.
Combs is being held on a $5,000 bond for reckless driving and driving with a suspended license, according to the departments.
