SALEM — Well-known radio broadcaster Herman Reavis was honored by Roanoke College as the 15th recipient of the Charles Brown Award, given annually to a Salem citizen who has contributed significantly to the city’s quality of life.
Radio airwaves turned Herman Reavis into a Roanoke Valley icon. He got his start at age 14 in 1947 at Galax’s AM station, WBOB.
Listeners throughout the region tuned into his “Squirm with Herm” boogie and blues show on WRIS radio in the 1950s.
