Funeral services will be held Thursday for a Grayson County woman killed last Thursday in a single-vehicle accident that occurred at the intersection of Virginia House Lane and U.S. 58, about three miles east of Independence.

First Sgt. Mike Musser of the Virginia State Police said Janie M. Hamby, 46, was a passenger in a 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee that was traveling west on U.S. 58 when it ran off the right side of the highway and overturned in a secluded area off Virginia House Lane that leads to a private residence.

Musser said the accident occurred about 11:30 a.m. and wasn’t discovered until about 7:30 p.m. when the home owner returned to his residence and noticed a for sale sign had been damaged near U.S. 58.

Scott Anders, who resides at Virginia House, said he went to check on the sign being torn down when he saw the wreckage in a secluded area. He was accompanied by Charles Cassell, who called 911, and Orville Cornett.

According to the accident report filed by Trooper Jessie Tilson, Janie M. Hamby, 73, the victim’s mother, was the driver. The medical transport helicopter, AirCare, landed on the highway to transport her to Wake Forest University Medical Center in Winston-Salem, N.C. She was not listed as a patient at the hospital Monday.

Musser said both victims were wearing their seatbelts.

No other details were available pending further investigation.

The Independence Volunteer Fire Department and the Independence Volunteer Rescue Squad assisted at the accident scene.
