  • Indoor Yard Sale planned

    FRIES — An Indoor Yard Sale will be held 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Feb. 4 at the Fries Recreation Center’s dining room and gym.
    Cost is $10 per space or $15 for two tables (bring your own tables) or $15 per space and includes a table.
    Pinto beans and cornbread will be available for a donation.
    Anyone interested in a space can come by or call Rhonda Elkins at (276) 744-2531 or 744-2231.
    Everyone welcome and encouraged to attend and support the Fries Recreation Center.

  • TCUW to host auction

    GALAX — Twin County United Way will hold its second annual Groundhog Day auction Feb. 3 at the Galax Elks Lodge.
    A variety of items will be available for the live auction to be conducted by Dawn Auction Company and various silent auctions will be held throughout the evening.
    Items include a building lot at the Cascade Mountain Resort in Fancy Gap and hot air balloon rides.

  • Chamber to host meeting

    SPARTA, N.C. – The Alleghany Chamber of Commerce will host its annual calendaring meeting Feb. 1 at the Alleghany Inn Conference Room at 5:15 p.m.
    Community organizations that host a public event or fundraiser are invited to post an activity on the 2012 calendar.
    The events will be posted on the Chamber’s calendar at www.sparta-nc.com.

  • Support Group to meet

    Grayson Nursing and Rehabilitaiton Center’s Alzheimer’s Support Group meets the third Tuesday monthly.
    The group is sponsored by Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care and is intended for caregivers of individuals with Alzheimer’s disease or other related forms of dementia.
    Meetings are held at 5 p.m. in the conference room.
    Staff, volunteers, family members and the public are invited.

  • Girl Scouts cookie sale underway

    Through March 31, local Girl Scouts become young business entrepreneurs as they learn goal setting, marketing skills, and money management during the annual cookie sale.
    Girl Scout Cookies are $4 a box and help support Girl Scout programs, camps and community service projects. Customers who purchase five boxes of cookies are eligible to have their names entered into a drawing for a year’s supply of cookies.

  • Land Stewardship Fair applications accepted

    Grayson LandCare, Inc., announced its fifth annual land stewardship competition.
    The contest encourages students to explore real economic, environmental and social problems facing Grayson County and to suggest innovative and sustainable solutions that are economically successful, protect the environment, and promote community involvement and well-being.
    Cash prizes of $1,000, $500 and $250 will be awarded for the top three places. Up to five commendation prizes of $50 each may be awarded.

  • Hospice cookbooks available

    SPARTA, N.C. – Meals & Memories, a cookbook published by High Country Hospice, is now available in Alleghany County.
    The book contains photos of patients Hospice has assisted, volunteers and recipes.
    Copies are $20 each or two for $35.
    Cookbooks can be purchased at the Sparta Hospice office, River Rock Grill, Seasons, Twin Oaks Grocery, Medi-Home Care and other locations.

  • La Leche League meeting set

    Breastfeeding information and support group La Leche League will meet in Galax 6 to 8 p.m. Jan. 23 at the Vaughan Building, next to the Galax Library.
    Topic is “The Advantages of Breastfeeding, for mom, baby and the world.”
    La Leche League offers support, information and help to nursing and pregnant women. Meetings are informal and open to all women. Babies and children welcome.

  • Lions Club announces poster winners

    The Independence Lions Club met Nov. 10 with six members present.
    Co-chairman Mary Kelley presented the club five outstanding peace posters from Doris Halsey’s middle school students.
    Winners of this year’s contest, with a theme of “Children Know Peace,” were Asheley Weimann, first place; Kara Moore, second place; and Claire Circle, third place.

  • District Three notes changes and challenges

    District Three Governmental Cooperative recently completed a successful fiscal year but faces challenges in providing an array of services for the area’s senior citizens and people in need of public transportation.
    For the year that ended September 30, 2011, District Three Senior Services provided core services such as meals and home repairs to 6,431 area seniors, while the transit division logged over 190,000 one-way trips.
