  • Lions Club announces poster winners

    The Independence Lions Club met Nov. 10 with six members present.
    Co-chairman Mary Kelley presented the club five outstanding peace posters from Doris Halsey’s middle school students.
    Winners of this year’s contest, with a theme of “Children Know Peace,” were Asheley Weimann, first place; Kara Moore, second place; and Claire Circle, third place.

  • La Leche League meeting set

    Breastfeeding information and support group La Leche League will meet in Galax 6 to 8 p.m. Jan. 23 at the Vaughan Building, next to the Galax Library.
    Topic is “The Advantages of Breastfeeding, for mom, baby and the world.”
    La Leche League offers support, information and help to nursing and pregnant women. Meetings are informal and open to all women. Babies and children welcome.

  • Land Stewardship Fair applications accepted

    Grayson LandCare, Inc., announced its fifth annual land stewardship competition.
    The contest encourages students to explore real economic, environmental and social problems facing Grayson County and to suggest innovative and sustainable solutions that are economically successful, protect the environment, and promote community involvement and well-being.
    Cash prizes of $1,000, $500 and $250 will be awarded for the top three places. Up to five commendation prizes of $50 each may be awarded.

  • Girl Scouts cookie sale underway

    Through March 31, local Girl Scouts become young business entrepreneurs as they learn goal setting, marketing skills, and money management during the annual cookie sale.
    Girl Scout Cookies are $4 a box and help support Girl Scout programs, camps and community service projects. Customers who purchase five boxes of cookies are eligible to have their names entered into a drawing for a year’s supply of cookies.

  • District Three notes changes and challenges

    District Three Governmental Cooperative recently completed a successful fiscal year but faces challenges in providing an array of services for the area’s senior citizens and people in need of public transportation.
    For the year that ended September 30, 2011, District Three Senior Services provided core services such as meals and home repairs to 6,431 area seniors, while the transit division logged over 190,000 one-way trips.

  • DAR chapter welcomes new member

    Carol Bryant Jeffreys of Mouth of Wilson was recently installed as a new member of the New River Pioneer Chapter NSDAR.
    Jeffreys’ application was verified and approved by the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution and verification of the proven lineal decent from her ancestor Benjamin Phipps.
    The program at the meeting was given by Clay Bane of Pembroke. Bane was dressed in Revolutionary War attire and  explained his outfit as well as the use of all the items a solider would carry with him.

  • Hospice cookbooks available

    SPARTA, N.C. – Meals & Memories, a cookbook published by High Country Hospice, is now available in Alleghany County.
    The book contains photos of patients Hospice has assisted, volunteers and recipes.
    Copies are $20 each or two for $35.
    Cookbooks can be purchased at the Sparta Hospice office, River Rock Grill, Seasons, Twin Oaks Grocery, Medi-Home Care and other locations.

  • Galax Rotary collects coats for 60 children

    GALAX — The Galax Rotary Club recently provided new winter coats for 60 children attending Galax Elementary School, through its Rotary Coats for Kids Project.
    The club thanked the public for its donations and support of the annual project.
    The coats were distributed to less-fortunate students representing 12 percent of the GES student body.

  • Healing Hearts group to meet

    Twin County Hospice Healing Hearts grief support group will meet at 10 a.m. Dec. 27 at Shoney’s in Hillsville.
    Breakfast is available for $5 per person. Anyone who has lost a loved one is welcome to attend and bring a guest.

  • VFW pays Tributes of Respect

    Eldred Hiter Robinson Jr.

    Grayson County VFW Post 7726 and the Virginia National Guard’s Gate City honor unit paid respects Nov. 20 at the burial of U.S. Army veteran Eldred Hiter Robinson Jr.
    Post Commander Dan Boyer and Chaplain Wayne Moore conducted the service. A firing squad provided a 21-gun salute.
    The U.S. flag was presented to Jane Robinson, wife of the deceased.

    Lawrence Oliver Brittain
