  • Annual train fair slated in Fairview

    The last revenue train left Galax Oct. 15, 1985, ending a century of railroading in the upper New River area. The New River Plateau Railway was chartered to build the line from Ivanhoe to the North Carolina state line In the mid-1880s.

  • Celebration

    The Galax-Grayson Retired Teachers Association honored Dona Cox with a luncheon at The Doctors Inn on June 5 to celebrate her 100th birthday. Cox retired from teaching at Independence High School.
     

  • Ivey earns degree in theological studies

    Robert Ivey of Mouth of Wilson was one of 139 students who was graduated from Sterling College located in  Sterling, Kans., on May 12.
    Ivey received a Bachelor of Arts in Theological Studies through Sterling College Online.
    Sterling College Online began in 2007 and offers programs for elementary education, mathematics education, history education, theological studies, Christian ministries, history and the professional studies courses for those who already hold a bachelor’s degree and would like to pursue teaching.

    Miller makes president’s list

    DUBLIN — Evelyn Miller of Grayson County was named to the president’s list at New River Community College for the 2012 spring semester.
    To be placed on the list, a student must have attained a grade point average of 3.5.

  • GNB presents scholarship

    Natasha Moore of Fries, was presented a $1,000 scholarship by Grayson National Bank during an awards ceremony held May 10.
    The Grayson County-based bank presents the scholarship each year to a graduating senior who plans to attend college and major in business.
    Scholarship candidates must demonstrate a positive work ethic as well as exhibiting a high level of business aptitude and skills.

  • Regional Care Providers receive awards

    The Maccabeans of Young’s Chapel Baptist Church was named outstanding long-term care provider for 2012 by the region’s Long-Term Care Coordinating Committee.
    The group was among recipients of bi-annual awards presented in Marion by a group composed of organizations providing in-home and institutional services for frail elderly people.
    The Maccabeans is a group of volunteers who provide minor home repair, yard work, painting, and other needs for elderly citizens in Grayson County. Their spokesperson is Donna Niemi.

  • Navy Seaman Logan C. Watson completes training

    Navy Seaman Apprentice Logan C. Watson was recently promoted to his current rank upon graduation from recruit training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.
    Watson is a 2011 graduate of Grayson County High School.
    He is the son of Tami J. and Greg A. Watson of Independence.
    Watson received the early promotion for outstanding performance during all phases of the training cycle.

  • Retired Galax Police personnel meet

    Retirees from the Galax Police Department and their spouses met at Country Side Restaurant for a meal and fellowship March 29, the group’s second meeting.
    Ray Melton, retired chief of police, welcomed the group and thanked those who organized and planned the event. Everyone enjoyed the evening.
    The next meeting will be a picnic at Gladeville United Methodist Church beginning 6 p.m. June 21. All retired Galax Police personnel are invited to bring a covered dish and join the group.
