  • Umberger, Anderson engaged

    Mr. and Mrs. Dale Umberger of Wytheville are pleased to announce the engagement of their daughter, Amanda Grey, to Travis Lee Anderson, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Anderson, of Flat Ridge.
    Amanda is the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. W.P. Ellison of Bland and Mr. and Mrs. Owen Umberger of Wytheville. She is a graduate of George Wythe High School, Wytheville Community College and Old Dominion University, where she received a Master of Science degree in Elementary Education. She is employed as an elementary teacher with Grayson County Public Schools.

  • James, Lineberry announce upcoming marriage

    Mr. and Mrs. Daryl James announce the upcoming marriage of their daughter, Jessica Ellen James, to Jeffrey Wayne Lineberry, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lineberry.
    Jeffrey is a 2007 graduate of Grayson County High School.
    Jessica is a 2008 graduate of Grayson County High School.
    Jeffrey is employed with Asplundh Tree Expert Co.
    Jessica is employed with Virginia’s Home Health and Hospice, located in Rural Retreat and is in school at King College to obtain her bachelor’s degree in nursing.

  • Sisters celebrate birthdays

    Jada Zollie Taylor celebrated her fourth birthday Nov. 13 with family, friends and neighbors attending a  Dora party at her home.
    Harley Rose Taylor celebrated her tenth birthday Dec. 20 with family, friends and neighbors attending a a Spongebob party at her home.
    The sisters are the daughters of Darrell and Meeka Taylor of Independence; granddaughters of Harold and Nadine Taylor of Elk Creek and Cage and Betty Royal of Sparta, N.C.; and the great-granddaughters of Gene and Alma Joines of Sparta and the late Everett and Margie Scott of Newport.

  • TCRH welcomes New Year baby

    Twin County Regional Hospital (TCRH) welcomed the first baby born in 2012.
    William Scott Richards, son of Brittany and Glenn Richards of Independence was the baby born closest to New Year’s Day; he was born Jan. 2 at 5:04 p.m. He weighed seven pounds, eleven ounces and measured 21 inches long. He was delivered at TCRH by Donald R. McKinley, MD of Blue Ridge Physicians for Women.
    TCRH thanked those who contributed to the family of the hospital’s New Year baby. Contributors included:  

  • DAR honors Ward

    New River Pioneer Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution celebrated Veterans Day by honoring one of its own, Dorothy Ward of Independence, at a surprise luncheon.
    Ward is the chapter’s only veteran who served during World War II.
    After the chapter completed the DAR ritual at the meeting, attendees sang the Marine Corps Hymn as a gesture of respect to honor Ward.
    Many members and friends attended to honor and surprise Ward.

  • Nelson, Campbell married

    Carrie Nelson and Eric Campbell were united in marriage on June 25, 2011 in the King College Memorial Chapel in Bristol, Tenn. The Rev. Doug Stuart, pastor of the bride, officiated.
    The bride is the daughter of Ricky and Becky Nelson of Independence and the granddaughter of Argil and Alene Roberts also of Independence and Mary Nelson and the late Billy Nelson of Corners Rock.
    The groom is the son of Clifton and Sonja Campbell of Unicoi, Tenn.
    The bride was escorted by her father and given in marriage by her parents.

  • Howard enlists in U.S. Navy

    Andrew M. Howard, a 2004 graduate of Galax High School, recently enlisted in the U.S. Navy through its delayed entry program at Navy recruiting district, Raleigh, N. C.
    The program allows recruits to enter the Navy and take up to one year to complete prior commitments such as education.
    Howard will report for active duty and undergo basic training at the recruit training center in Great Lakes, Ill.

  • Outgoing Grayson supervisors honored

    More than 32 years of collective service to Grayson County will leave office on Dec. 31 as three outgoing supervisors prepare to preside over their final meeting this month.
    Joe Vaughan (serving his third term as Providence District supervisor), Larry Bartlett (serving his third term as Oldtown District supervisor) and Doug Carrico (serving his second term as at-large supervisor) were each honored with a plaque during their final regularly scheduled meeting last week, as county officials thanked them for their service.

  • Roanoke College honors former Galax broadcaster

    SALEM — Well-known radio broadcaster Herman Reavis was honored by Roanoke College as the 15th recipient of the Charles Brown Award, given annually to a Salem citizen who has contributed significantly to the city’s quality of life.
    Radio airwaves turned Herman Reavis into a Roanoke Valley icon. He got his start at age 14 in 1947 at Galax’s AM station, WBOB.
    Listeners throughout the region tuned into his “Squirm with Herm” boogie and blues show on WRIS radio in the 1950s.

  • 90th birthday

    Emolene McKnight of Independence will celebrate her 90th birthday with an open house hosted by her children and grandchildren, 4-7 p.m. Dec. 30 at Independence First United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall. Friends and family are invited.
