  • New business opens

    Samantha Jones, a certified massage therapist, opened a new shop in Wytheville last Friday.
    Her business will be located inside Graceful Strokes at 325-B East Main Street.
    Jones lives in the Gladeville community and is a graduate of Virginia Tech.

  • D.S. Wright expanding

    D.S. Wright Insurance in Independence has announced the purchase of Dickenson Insurance Agency in Independence.
    The sale is effective Aug. 1.
    John Dickenson, owner of Dickenson Insurance, said he opened the office in 1989 and became an independent agent in 1995. Dickenson said he plans to work for Wright on a part-time basis to work with his customers during the transition.
    Wright said he didn’t plan to make any major changes and felt Dickenson could make the transition go more smoothly with his customers.

  • Area residents win awards in Chautauqua Festival

    WYTHEVILLE -- The Wytheville Chautauqua Festival honored 35 winners at the festival’s Creative Writing Contest awards ceremony on June 24.  
    The awards were presented following a literary reading and presentation by author Jim Minick.   
    Cash prizes were awarded in three categories (essay, poem, short story) to writers in three age groups (grades 6-9, grades 10-12, and adult).

  • Mays honored at birthday party

    ELK CREEK – Louise Mays was honored July 2 with a birthday party at her home on Comers Rock Road.
    Attending were: Mr. and Mrs. Steve Ashby and daughter, Emma of Mt. Pleasant, N.C.; Mr. and Mrs. Pat Fisher of Charlotte, N.C.; Mr. and Mrs. Randall Jones of Warrenton, Va.; Mrs. Fred Jones, Mrs. Jane Simms and Mr. and Mrs. Mack Farmer, all of Elk Creek.
    Mays thanked everyone for “her many cards.”
     

  • Workforce staffers honored

    Workforce development staff members from five Virginia community colleges, including Wytheville Community College (WCC), were honored at a recent ceremony held at New River Community College in Dublin.
    The Chancellor’s Workforce Development Awards luncheon brought together staff from Mountain Empire, New River, Southwest Virginia, Virginia Highlands, and Wytheville Community Colleges to celebrate the work of outstanding individuals supporting the goals of their respective colleges and the Virginia Community College System (VCCS).

  • Independence council okays mural project

    The Town of Independence office on Main Street received a new awning last week and now the building will soon have a mural painted on the side.
    After discussion by Town Council at its meeting last Tuesday, Councilman Jason Cassell made the motion to employ Charles Akers to paint the mural at a total cost not to exceed $2,500, with the labor not exceeding $1,900. The motion was passed unanimously.
    No date was given as to when work will begin on the mural.

  • Area students receive recognition

    WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — John Zachary Mundy of Independence, Va., was graduated cum laude from Wake Forest University on May 16.
    Mundy received a degree in chemistry, with honors.

  • Anderson honored

    Dustin Ray Anderson of Troutdale was among several students honored for accomplishments during Emory & Henry College’s annual awards day ceremony on April 17.
    Anderson was honored with an athletic training Junior Achievement award.
     

  • Barrett makes band

    BLACKSBURG — Jonathan Barrett of Independence has gained membership to the Virginia Tech regimental band, the Highty-Tighties.
    Barrett is an academic sophomore majoring in biochemistry in the College of Sciences.
    He becomes part of Virginia Tech’s longest-serving musical organization. The Highty-Tighties represent the university at football games and parades all over the East Coast.

  • Parade winners

    Winners of the Town of Independence’s annual Fourth of July parade were announced July 4.
    First and second places were awarded. Categories and winners, first through second places include:
    • float, Grayson County VFW Post 7726 and Hilltop Home for Adults
    • pedestrian, Daughters of American Revolution and Coy Walls
    • equestrian, Savana Luper and Mckayla Madden
    • antique car, Ronnie Bonham and Ron and Connie Farmer
