  • White places in pageant

    Savannah Renée White, daughter of Richard and Miranda White of Independence, won second runner-up in the Santa’s Baby Doll Pageant held Dec. 18 at Fort Chiswell High School auditorium.
    The pageant was sponsored by Rock-A-Buy Baby Consignment of Wytheville.
    Savannah won Miss Photogenic in the contest. She received a large trophy, a banner, two medallions, a baby doll and other gifts.
    Savannah was sponsored by Grayson National Bank, The Quik Chek, Grayson Express and her family.

  • Vaughn turns 8

    Chloe Reese Vaughn celebrated her eighth birthday Dec. 5. She is the daughter of Mike and Tina Vaughn of Galax. She is the granddaughter of Eddie and Joye Edwards of Ennice, N.C., and Steve and Mattie Vaughn of Mauldin, S.C.

  • Grayson recognizes Hackler

    Thirty-one years is a long time to be employed by any one organization, and Grayson County made a point to recognize a retiring employee with that tenure during its regular meeting Dec. 8.
    Gena Hackler, who has served as the county’s assessor since 1997, has taken advantage of the county’s deferred retirement plan and was honored earlier this month by the board of supervisors.

  • Crime-fighting family

    In the Burnett household, Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners are filled with war stories, about catching the bad guy and saving lives.
    With five Burnetts — three generations — serving in law enforcement, it seems to be something in the Burnett gene pool that has the family craving law enforcement.
    The bug started with Claude Burnett, who began on the Galax Police Department in 1976 and retired as a lieutenant in 2001. He always had an interest in law enforcement and decided to take the plunge at age 37, after working in retail for 10 years, he said.

  • Osborne achieves Eagle Scout rank

    A McDonough, Ga.,  resident with ties to Grayson County, has attained the highest rank in the Boy Scouting Program of the Boy Scouts of America.  
    JohnAndrew Osborne has achieved the rank of Eagle, joining more than 2 million young men in America to have earned this rare distinction.
    Osborne  is the grandson of Elaine and Tommy Osborne of Elk Creek, while his Aunt Jodie Osborne and Cousin Laura Lane Osborne reside in Independence.

  • IHS Class of ‘62 holds reunion

    The Independence High School Class of 1962 held its 48th class reunion Oct. 9.
    The day began with a breakfast in the school cafeteria and a tour of the high school building. After the tour, many members of the class observed the annual outhouse race and fall festival in downtown Independence. A catered lunch was served at the Grayson Recreation Park Pavilion and class members upgraded their classmates on family, education and work since graduation. Comedy skits and classmates picking the guitar and singing kept everyone entertained.

  • ‘I’m one’

    Aiden Alexander Chambers of Galax, celebrated his first birthday on Oct. 27 with a Sponge Bob party at his home on Oct. 31. He is the son of Brad and Krissy Chambers. His grandparents are Larry and Judy Chambers of Galax and Donnie and Tammy Easter of Hillsville. His great-grandparents are Don and Pat Easter of Fancy Gap, James and Shirley Cheely of St. Augustine, Fla., and Marie Chambers of Galax. His great-great grandparents are Bernard and Ruth Easter of Florida.

  • Class of 1950 holds reunion

    The Independence High School class of 1950 held a reunion at First United Methodist Church in Independence on Sept. 12. Attending were, from left: (front row) Evelyn K. Wright, (second row) teacher Nena Hash, Norman Collins, Cathern Reeves and Avoneal Lester; (back row) Myron McBride, Omar Ross, J.C. Barton, James Hendrix, J.C. McKnight and Tom Cox. Classmates and spouses enjoyed a musical program by Darrell Ritchie and a catered meal.

  • Law enforcement officers attend crisis training

    WYTHEVILLE — Sixteen officers attended Crisis Intervention Team training at Mount Rogers Community Services Board’s Administrative Offices in Wytheville Oct. 18-22. Officers represented Wytheville, Hillsville, and Galax Police Departments, Grayson, Bland, and Carroll County Sheriff’s Offices, and Areas 24 and 26 of the Virginia State Police.  Mount Rogers CIT has trained a total of 138 officers as Crisis Intervention Team members to date.
