  • Blevins celebrates birthday

    Nathan Kyle Blevins celebrated his 9th birthday Aug. 21, 2011. He is a fourth grade student and loves Transformers. He is the son of Rita Blevins and Raymond Blevins.

  • Perfect SOL scores

    Grayson Highlands School recognized students with 600 SOL (Standards of Learning) test scores.   • Library thanks summer readers

    GALAX — The Galax-Carroll Regional Library thanked the young people of Galax, Carroll County and surrounding areas who came out this summer to make the 2011 Summer Reading Program a success.
    The library said the community graciously supported the “Amazing Tales at Your Library” program.
    More than 320 young people, ages infant-12, were registered for the program at the Galax and Carroll County libraries this year.

    Baywood Elementary recently announced its Student of The Month awards for August.   • Local students earn college honors

    New River Community College

    DUBLIN — Brian Davis and Evelyn Miller of Grayson County were honored for academic excellence at New River Community College by being named to the president’s list for summer 2011.
    To be placed on the list, a student must have taken 12 college-level semester hours or more, attained a grade point average of 3.5 for the semester, and earned a minimum of 20 semester hours at NRCC.

  • Vaughan completes national sheriffs’ program

    LONGMONT, Col. – Grayson County Sheriff Richard Vaughan completed participation in the 100th session of the National Sheriffs’ Institute (NSI) held in Longmont, Colorado, Aug. 28 – Sept. 3.
    The NSI is the only national executive development program designed for sheriffs.  This no-cost program is co-sponsored by the National Institute of Corrections (NIC) and the National Sheriffs’ Association (NSA).  
    Vaughan is the first sheriff of Grayson County to graduate from the NSI.      

  • Outstanding

    Grayson County VFW Post 7726 Ladies Auxiliary member Julia Valentine recently was named the state’s “Outstanding Auxiliary Secretary of the Year.” Valentine is long-time secretary and was selected out of all the auxiliaries in Virginia for this prestigious award. President Jeanette Boyer presented the prestigious award, including a trophy, to Valentine. The Ladies Auxiliary extended a “heartfelt thank you” to Valentine for “a job well-done.”

  • Marples celebrate 50 years

    Bill and Pat Marple celebrated 50 years of marriage on Sept. 9, 2011.  
    They married in a church in Arlington after a two-year courtship. The Marples celebrated the occasion this summer with their four daughters and spouses, and seven grandchildren on a cruise to the Bahamas. They all had a blast, the family said.

  • Shepard, Harris engaged

    Danny and Tami Shepard of Tazewell announce the engagement of their daughter, Lauren Danielle Shepard of Independence, to Van Harris of Speedwell.
    Harris is the son of Grover and Frances Harris of Speedwell.
    Shepard’s grandparents are Nell Simmons and the late Robert E. Simmons.
    Shepard and Harris plan to marry 4 p.m. Oct. 29, 2011 at Trinity United Methodist Church.

  • Blue Ribbons

    Grayson Highlands School students (from left) Tori Graybeal, Kandace James and Raya Spencer each received a blue ribbon on their needlework at the Alleghany County Fair in August. The students exhibited counted cross-stitch work.
