  • Slate Mountain Ramblers, Country Boys both featured at music center

    Patrick County is famous for its deep-rooted musical traditions.
    You’ll understand why when you hear the Slate Mountain Ramblers and the Country Boys on Saturday, July 28 at the Blue Ridge Music Center (BRMC).
         As always, there will also be free Mid-Day Mountain Music in the BRMC breezeway from noon - 4 p.m. and the free Roots of American Music Museum will be open from 9 a.m. – 8 p.m. on this concert night.

  • Alleghany Fiddlers Convention slated

    SPARTA, N.C. – The 18th annual Alleghany County Fiddlers Convention is slated July 20-21 at the Higgins Agricultural Fairgrounds on U.S. 21 north in Sparta.
    Competition begins at 6 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. on Saturday, with a band championship playoff set for Saturday night.
    Emcees are Sonia Joines and Tarras Day.
    Winners in the different categories will share prize money of $2,850 in cash, along with ribbons.

  • ACT continues ‘Meeting of Minds’ series

    SPARTA, N.C. — ACT Readers Theatre continues its series of “Meeting of Minds” productions with show 6 scheduled for July 17, 19 and 20.
    The show will present a fresh new group of great minds from history including Susan B. Anthony, Sir Francis Bacon, Emiliano Zapata, and Socrates.  

  • Center hosts special concert

    Blue Ridge Music Center will host a special concert featuring renowned southern songwriters on July 14.
    Kentuckian Larry Cordle, known for his hit song “Murder on Music Row” about the death of traditional country music, will perform.
    His deep voice and relaxed presence on stage combined with an all-star group of pickers, (nominated twice for grammy’s) has made the band popular.

  • Festival announces design winners

    This year the steering committee for the fall festival at Grayson Highlands School asked sixth and seventh graders in Sherry Perry’s science class to design the stamp cancellation for the festival.
    Winners were Kayla Delp, first place; Hayley Walls, second; Taylor Sharpe, third. They were presented prizes at a June 4 steering committee meeting.
    Organizers thanked all the participating students, and Ms. Perry and Karen Ham who acted as liaison between the school and the committee.

  • Elk Creek Volunteer Fire Department announces Fiddlers’ Convention winners

    Elk Creek Volunteer Fire Department held its annual Fiddlers Convention on June 22-23.

  • Metal bands to perform June 29

    GALAX — Local metal band Cult of Dionysis will perform at S5 Sports Bar and Lounge in Galax on June 29 along with local legend Doom Syndicate, Annabell Leigh from Sterling Terrace and Mooresville N.C., 21st Century Goliath from Charlotte, N.C., and White Knuckle Blackout.
    Tentative lineup schedule, which is subject to change, includes:
    • White Knuckle Black Out - 7:45 p.m.
    • Annabell Leigh - 8:45 p.m.
    • Doom Syndicate - 9:45 p.m.
    • Cult of Dionysis - 10:45 p.m.

  • Free workshop for artisans planned

    ’Round the Mountain: Southwest Virginia’s Artisan Network invites artisans, galleries and the public to attend a free three-hour workshop, “Practical Business Tips for Artisans.”
    The session is 4-7 p.m. July 17 at Grayson County Public Library.

  • New River Brass to perform

    The New River Brass, a five-member brass ensemble, will present a public concert 7:30 p.m. June 23 at the 1908 Courthouse in Independence. Admission is free.
    They  will play a widely varied program, from Bach and Mozart to jazz and works based on English and American folk music. At a recent performance, the group was praised for the quality of its ensemble work and the balance of the program.  
    The members are David Hoffman- trombone, Taryn Wooten-french horn, Ric Munsey-trumpet, Jonathan Todd-trumpet, and Eli Borchgrevink-tuba.  

  • Auditions to be held in Galax for musical

    Auditions by the Arts Council of the Twin Counties for “Beehive: The 60s Musical” are at 2 p.m. Sunday and 7 p.m. Monday at the Rex Theatre.
    The Galax Theatre Guild and the Twin County Arts Council seeks female singers and dancers for the production.
