  • Fourth of July festivities return to Fries Ballpark

    Fries Recreation Center, Fries Volunteer Fire Department and the Town of Fries are hosting a  Fourth of July Celebration in the Fries Ballpark.
    Vendors are needed to set up in the outfield for the flea market area. For more information,  call Rhonda Elkins at the Fries Recreation Center, (276) 744-2531
    (No food vendors are needed since the recreation center will sell food.)
    Gates open at 9 a.m. at the park. Parade begins at 12:30 p.m.

  • Music Center hosts bands

    The Snyder Family, Joe Mullins & The Radio Ramblers will perform Bluegrass–gospel at the Blue Ridge Music Center June 23

  • N.C. Mountain Arts Adventure set June 15-17

    Twelve galleries and studios will host a self-guided studio tour Friday, Saturday and Sunday, June 15-17, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. to celebrate the creativity of more than 50 artists and craftspeople working in Alleghany County, N.C.

  • Center hosts concerts

    The Gibson Brothers and Wayne Henderson and friends will perform at the June 15 kickoff concert at the Blue Ridge Music Center.
    The Henderson group will perform first, then the Gibson group will perform bluegrass with tight harmony blend.
    The Gibsons won the 2011 IBMA Vocal Group of the year and this year received the SPGMA Album of the Year award for the CD, “Help My Brother.”
    The concert starts at 7 p.m. Seating opens at 5:30. Tickets

  • Performers announced for Henderson Festival

    MOUTH OF WILSON — The Gibson Brothers will headline the 18th annual Wayne C. Henderson Music Festival and Guitar Competition on June 16 at Grayson Highlands State Park near Mouth of Wilson.
    Also appearing are Charles Welch, the Water Tower Bucket Boys, Larnell Starkey and the Spiritual Seven, Dori Freeman, and Wayne Henderson and Friends.

    The Fries Recreation Center needs flea market vendors for its Fourth of July festival.
    Cost is $25 per space.

  • Bands perform at Music Center

    Two popular bluegrass and old-time bands will perform June 9 at the Blue Ridge Music Center.
    Big Country Bluegrass will perform traditional bluegrass,  old country songs and instrumentals while being joined by Kentucky singer and multi-instrumentalist Don Rigsby from the band Midnight Call.
    Rigsby has a distinctive tenor voice and has performed with Charlie Sizemore, J.D. Crowe & The New South and was a member of the Bluegrass Cardinals and The Lonesome River Band.
    Also performing will be Whitetop Mountain Band.

  • Students plan 'A Tribute to the Great American Songbook'

    The Grayson County High School Honors Choir will present “A Tribute to the Great American Songbook” on Thursday and Friday, May 10 and 11 at 7 p.m. in the Grayson County High School Auditorium.
    Admission is free.
    Musical highlights from the 1920s, 30s, 40s, 50s and beyond will be performed with focus on such styles of music as broadway hits, jazz standards, songs from the big band era, Tin Pan Alley, and others.

  • Willing Partners plans fundraiser, food drive

    GALAX — Local thrift store and food bank Willing Partners will have a fundraising music event and food drive May 12 at the Rex Theatre.
    “Stevie Barr and Friends” will provide entertainment for an evening that is intended to provide more food for the shelves at Willing Partners food bank.
    Barr will perform bluegrass, gospel, and old-time music with other area talent such as Wade Petty, Gary Patton, Charles Kinzer, Karen Carr, and Charlie Edwards.
