  • Jamboree set Dec. 17

    Wytheville Community College will sponsor its free monthly Bluegrass and Old-Time Jamboree featuring Wayne Henderson and Friends and the Wolfe Brothers on Saturday, Dec. 17, from 7-9 p.m.
    The Jamboree will be held in the William F. Snyder Auditorium on the WCC campus, located at 1000 East Main Street in Wytheville.

  • Theater Group presents ‘Her Christmas Wish’

    Comers Rock Theater Group presents “Her Christmas Wish” 7 p.m. Dec. 2 and 7 p.m. Dec. 3.
    Meals will be served both nights.
    Tickets for the Dec. 2 performance, which includes  a spaghetti dinner, are $15.
    Tickets for the Dec. 3 performance, which includes a ham dinner, are $25.
    Doors open at 6:45 p.m.
    Tickets are available from Grayson National Bank in Elk Creek, Galax Farm Supply in Galax and Grayson Florist in Independence.

  • Highland Camerata presents winter concerts

    The Highland Camerata chorus will present three winter concerts in early December in Galax, Independence, and Sparta, N.C.
    The schedule is: 7:30 p.m. Dec. 6 at Sparta Presbyterian Church, 7:30 p.m. Dec. 9 at Brush Creek Hall near Independence, and 3 p.m. Dec. 11 at Galax Presbyterian Church.
    The major work will be Johann Pachelbel’s “Magnificat,” which is based on the Biblical pronouncement from St. Luke, chapter one.
    “Ava Maria” and “O Nata Lux” by Morton Lauridsen will be sung in Latin to compliment the Magnificat.

  • ‘Nunsense’ performances set Nov. 17, 20

    GALAX —The Arts & Cultural Council of the Twin Counties presents a rollicking musical comedy at the Rex Theatre in Galax 7:30 p.m. Nov. 17 and 2:30 p.m. Nov. 20.
    “Nunsense” is a hilarious talent show staged by five survivors at the Little Sisters of Hoboken nunnery, the rest of the sisterhood having succumbed to botulism after eating vichyssoise prepared by Sister Julia, Child of God.

  • School, Pottery Co-op host showcase in Galax

    GALAX — Old Town Pottery Cooperative and Chestnut Creek School of the Arts will offer a raku pottery showcase at the Chestnut Creek building on Nov. 26, 10 a.m.-2 p.m.
    Raku is a firing process that involves removing ceramic pieces from the kiln while they are still glowing red hot. Ceramic pieces fired this way are characterized by a metallic glow and can have a distinct white crackle appearance. Outdoor firings are held behind the Old Town Pottery Cooperative.

  • Memorial Bluegrass festival set Nov. 5

    GALAX — The Annual Larry Pennington and Alan Mastin Memorial Bluegrass and Old Time Music Festival will be held Nov. 5 at the Fairview Ruritan Club.
    Music begins at 3 p.m. Bands include Big Country Bluegrass, Mountain Park Old Time Band, Tony Holt & Wildwood Valley Boys and Mountain Drive.
    Emcee is Harold Mitchell.
    Admission is $15. Children younger than 10 are admitted free.
    Dancers are welcome. Food available.
    The festival is sponsored by Big Country Bluegrass. For more information, call (276) 579-2265.

  • VFW art competition open for entries

    The Young American Creative Patriotic Art Scholarship program is a competition for college scholarships that is offered by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary and entries are being accepted.
    The contest is open to all students in grades nine through 12, as well as home-schooled students. This is a chance for students to express patriotism through art. Students have a chance to win prize money and a scholarship.

  • Gold Hill singing on Oct. 15

    Gospel singing on Oct. 15th at Gold Hill Baptist Church at 7 p.m. “Born Free” and “Saved By Grace” will be the feature singers. Everyone is welcome. The church is located on Highway 58 in the Gold Hill Community.

  • Mountain Foliage Festival

    A  large crowd took advantage of the warm fall sunshine to attend the Mountain Foliage Festival and Grand Privy Race last Saturday. Main Street was closed to traffic during the privy races.

  • Band travels for competition

    The Grayson County High School Marching Band will perform at Drums Along the Blue Ridge at 1 p.m. Oct. 8 at Bassett High School.
    Admission is $8 per person. Concessions will be available. A number of schools will participate.
    The Bassett High School Marching Band, four-time ASSBA state champions, will give an exhibition.
