  • 2011 acreage report deadline is July 15

    The deadline to report 2011 acreages planted for tobacco, grain sorghum, soybeans, hay, pasture and CRP/CREP acres with the Farm Service Agency (FSA) is July 15.  
    All producers who wish to participate in FSA programs must complete an acreage report.  
    All CRP/CREP participants must complete an acreage report to receive annual payments.  
    An acreage report can be completed on form FSA-578 in the Galax USDA Service Center, which is located at 968 East Stuart Drive.  

  • Mount Rogers Fraser Fir preservation efforts underway

    A new, second generation, Mount Rogers Fraser Fir Seed Orchard was celebrated as a partnership with the Virginia Department of Forestry and the Mount Rogers Christmas Tree Growers Association, Inc. in ceremonies held June 26.
    Virginia Commonwealth State Forester, Carl Garrison III, shared the vision of the collaboration and partnership for a seed orchard as a way to preserve the superior characteristics of the Mount Rogers Fraser fir for many generations of Christmas tree farmers and their customers in the future.  

  • Blue Ridge Crest awards announced

    Recipients of the Blue Ridge Crest Community Leadership Development Awards for 2010 activities were announced recently by Douglas Vaught, managing member of Blue Ridge Crest LLC.
    The Carroll County High School Interact Club, Twin County Regional Chamber of Commerce, Chestnut Creek School of the Arts and the Virginia Cooperative Extension Service, Leadership Development Class each received $1,000 and a certificate in recognition of service to Grayson and Carroll counties and Galax.

  • Planning town events worskshop set

    GALAX — A seminar on how townspeople and merchants can plan events for participation and profit will be held July 12 at Crossroads Institute in Galax at 8 a.m.
    Learn ways to work together, success stories from other towns, ways to maximize profits.
    Speaker is retail consultant Marc Wilson of the Virginia Small Business Development Center. He is available for one on one visits with businesses.

  • Twin County Family Care of Hillsville open

    HILLSVILLE — Twin County Regional Healthcare opened Twin County Family Care of Hillsville on June 6, and welcomed Dr. Preston H. Edwards and family nurse practitioner Joy K. Creed as its staff.
    Edwards joined the Twin County Regional Healthcare medical staff in September 2006 and joined Twin County Family Care of Hillsville on June 6.
    He is a graduate of Emory University School of Medicine. He completed his residency at Roanoke Memorial Hospital and has been board-certified in family practice since October 1977.

  • Local beef served at Smithsonian reception

    Natural beef from a Grayson County company was served during a special dinner last Thursday night at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History.
    A chef from The Majestic, a fine-dining restaurant in Alexandria, prepared braised beef short ribs  served during the museum’s Wine and Dine Reception. Grayson Natural Foods, LLC, donated the beef.
    Grayson Natural is a local, natural beef production and marketing company located in Grayson County.

  • Walmart plans Express stores

    Walmart, known for its huge supercenters, will try something new in the future – Walmart Express.
    Wal-Mart Stores announced plans last week to open its first Walmart Express in rural Gentry, Ark.
    The 15,000-square-foot store will carry only the items customers need on the spur of the moment, such as milk, eggs, and DVDs.
    Wal-Mart, the world’s largest retailer based in Bentonville, Ark., plans to build 15 to 20 Walmart Express stores by the end of fiscal year in January 2012.

  • Appalachian Power head defends Virginia rates

    Southwest Virginia’s dramatic shift in less than a decade from having some of the nation’s cheapest electric rates to paying rates more in line with national averages reflects increasing environmental scrutiny and the changing dynamics of a global coal market, the president of Appalachian Power Co. recently told Roanoke business and community leaders.
    Charles Patton said those trends, particularly of more global demand and higher prices for coal, are unlikely to change and will lead the utility to look toward natural gas as a less expensive option.

  • Readers, writers unite: Book Festival features authors, meetings and more

    GALAX — This makes the sixth year for the Leaf & String book festival on East Grayson Street, featuring more than 40 writers under the Author’s Tent on Grayson Street in front of Chapters Bookshop in downtown Galax.
    “Authors on Grayson Street” will be held on June 10 from noon to 6 p.m. and on June 11 from 8 a.m.-5 p.m.
    Sponsored by Chapters Bookshop, the book festival began September 2006. A couple of years later, it joined the city’s annual Leaf & String Festival.
