  • District changes need citizens’ input, feedback

    As Grayson County prepares to redistrict — a required process following each U.S. Census — it’s important to remember that critical to this process is citizen involvement.
    Why? This is a plan we’ll have to live with for the next 10 years. We have one chance in a decade to “get this right,” so to speak.
    And getting this right requires citizens’ understanding and input.

  • Independence Town Council seeks citizen for vacant council seat

    Anyone interested in serving on Independence Town Council is asked to contact Town Manager Kenneth Vaught as soon as possible to add your name to the list of candidates.
    Council set a special meeting for Thursday, June 2 at 7 p.m. at the Independence Volunteer Fire Department to interview candidates to fill the unexpired term of Jeremy Walters.
    Walters had to resign last month because he moved outside the town corporate limits.
    Mayor Butch Reeves urges anyone interested in serving the final three years on the term to call Vaught.

  • Wildwood project set to close

    Blue Ridge Crossroads Economic Development Authority expected to close on the Wildwood property earlier this month, said BRCEDA Director Ken McFadyen.
    The park is strategically located near Interstate 77, about a mile from Twin County Regional Airport and within a two-hour drive of several Fortune 500 companies in North Carolina.
    “We think that all of these elements make this property attractive and beneficial to companies,” said McFadyen.

  • Supervisors to citizens: No tax increase this year

    Grayson County’s budget is balanced without a tax increase for the first time in three years.
    Hammered in back-to-back budgets, Grayson residents have pleaded in recent weeks for supervisors to keep spending down and not increase taxes – again.
    County Administrator Jonathan Sweet said those magic words last Wednesday night during a budget work session: “We have a balanced budget.”
    That balanced budget includes a recommended revenue stream of a little more than $20 million, with matching expenses.

  • Carroll Primary results reported

    Carroll County voters selected several candidates for the Nov. 8 general election in last Saturday’s preferential primary.
    For sheriff, J.B. Gardner, the school resource officer at Carroll County High School, won the nomination with 2,099 votes in unofficial results.
    Investigator Fred Bobbitt was second with 1,360 votes and Chief Deputy Glenn Nester was third with 1,256 votes.
    Long-time sheriff Warren Manning plans to retire when his term ends on Dec. 31.
    Three candidates were also seeking the nomination for commissioner of the revenue.

  • Comers Rock Club may get ownership of building

    The Comers Rock Community Club may obtain ownership of the old schoolhouse they have called home for more than a half-century.
    Members of the Club – which have hosted events such as the Home Demonstration Ladies, Annual Wildlife Dinner, Annual Comers Rock Cemetery Dinner, wedding showers, receptions, baby showers, birthday parties, fall festivals, pinto bean suppers, rook tournaments, male beauty pageants, theater group – asked the Grayson County Board of Supervisors to respectfully allow the Club to take ownership of the building last month.

  • County could buy a bus in 2013

    Grayson County says it is going the extra mile when it comes to school system transportation needs.
    The board voted last Wednesday night to invest up to $75,000 a year towards the purchase of school buses. The policy would take effect in 2013.
    Supervisor Joe Vaughan – who is serving his final six months on the board and who also is a Grayson County schools bus driver– asked his fellow board members to consider earmarking a portion of the revenue the county collects from its county decal fee to purchase school buses for the school system.

  • Code amended for veterans’ tax

    The General Assembly amended the Code of Virginia to allow a 100 percent service-connected disabled veteran or surviving spouse to qualify for a tax exemption on their real estate taxes and residence under certain conditions.
    For a surviving spouse, the death of the veteran must have occurred on or after Jan. 1, 2011, and the surviving spouse has not remarried and continues to occupy the real property as the principal residence.
    The provisions were added in Sections 58.1-3219.5 and 58.1-3219.6 of the state code.
