  • Sports Briefs for March 7, 2012
    • Movie night A Dolphin Tale will be the featured movie during movie night at the Galax Recreation Center on March 9 from 7-9 p.m. Children are urged to bring their favorite float and watch the movie in the pool. Children under the age of 11 must have an adult with them at all times and children under the age of 5 must have an adult in the pool with them at all times. The cost is $3 per person.

  • Quesenberry has hole-in-one at BRCC
    GALAX – This isn’t the best golfing weather but Walt Quesenberry of Hillsville braved the cold, windy weather on Dec. 18 at Blue Ridge Country Club and was rewarded with a hole-in-one. With the temperatures in the upper 30s, Quesenberry and golfing friend Ed Gardner were playing the 12th hole, a par 3, 154-yard hole. Quesenberry used a 5-iron to ace the hole.

    • Golf Classic slated Sept. 24 at New River  SPARTA, N.C. –  Kids Voting USA in Alleghany County will sponsor Golf Classic 2011 on Saturday,  Sept. 24 at New River Country Club in Sparta. The grand prize will be four grandstand tickets to the NASCAR Spring Cup qualifying Bojangles Pole Night on Oct. 13 and four tickets to the Bank of America 500 NASCAR race on Oct. 15 in Charlotte, N.C.

  • New River Dualthon is Aug. 20
    Twin County Regional Healthcare Wellness Center will sponsor the New River Dualthon on Saturday, Aug. 20 along the New River Trail State Park. The event includes a 5K run followed by a 21-mile bike ride on the trail and then another 5K run. Entry fee is $35 per participant or $50 for teams. Registration deadline is Aug. 19. Proceeds will aid the wellness center rehab clients in their recovery. For more information, call (276) 236-5931.

    Practice for the Grayson County Blue Devil golf team begins Wednesday, Aug. 3 at New River Country Club at 5 p.m. Coach James Davis said all boys and girls in grades 9-12 are invited to try out for the team.

  • Cross country practice
    GALAX -- Practice will begin Aug. 1 at 8 a.m. at the New River Trail caboose access in Galax. Meet at the parking lot. The Maroon Tide cross country team is open to all Galax High school students in grades 7-12. Athletes must have a VHSL physical to begin practice.   • Church plans tournament
    ENNICE, N.C. – A captain’s choice golf tournament will be held Saturday, July 30 at Crestview Golf Course in Ennice. A shotgun start is set for 9 a.m. for the 4-person team. Prizes will be presented to the winning teams. Breakfast will be available and hot dogs sold for lunch. Entry fee is $30 per player with proceeds going to benefit the Camp Zion Church building fund.   • Girls basketball skills camp set at Cliffview
    State Line Rush will host a Basketball Skills Camp on Aug. 16, 19 and 20, from 1-4 p.m. at the Cliffview Church of God gym. The camp is open to home schooled girls, ages 10 to 18.   • Registration underway for fall sports
    Registration is underway for fall sports programs by the Grayson County Recreation Department. A $25 fee is charged per participant or $5 more for late registrants. Registration dates are: pee-wee football grades 4-7 until Aug. 15; youth soccer for grades 4-7 and pee-wee cheerleading grades 4-7 until Aug. 25; K-3 soccer and K-3 football until Aug. 25.
