  • Oak Hill Warriors crowned...

    MOUTH OF WILSON – Winning a national basketball championship is nothing new for Oak Hill Academy.
    The Warriors have won eight titles but the eighth was special because it marked the most wins in a season for the Warriors, which posted a 44-0 season.
    Ronnie Flores of ESPNHS was at Oak Hill last Friday to honor the historic season by the Warriors.
    Oak Hill students and other guests attended the award ceremonies.
    Flores said the Warriors were able to set the record by beating some of the best teams in the nation.

  • High school teams can compete in...

    A challenge trophy competition among area high school teams is a new feature of this year’s American Red Cross Golf Bash on May 23.
    Golf coaches in several Southwest Virginia schools have received letters of invitation, announcing the trophy and encouraging them to enter a team.
    Schools will compete for the challenge trophy, a $100 donation to the winning team’s golf program, as well as bragging rights.
    Tournament co-chairs are Jim and Ellen Saunders of Wood’s River Chapter of the American Red Cross.

  • VFW to sponsor golf tournament

    VFW Post 7726 will sponsor a golf tournament May 5 at Crestview Golf Course, starting at 8 a.m.
    Cost is $30 per person. Format is captain’s choice four-man teams.
    Prizes are $200 first place and $100 second place. Mulligans cost $3 for one or $5 for two. Prizes for closest to pin on par threes, longest drive, closest to line. Door prizes awarded.
    Breakfast biscuits and lunch will be sold by the VFW Ladies Auxiliary.

  • ACC All-Stars to play in Grayson

    Several of the top senior basketball players in the Atlantic Coast Conference will play at Grayson County High School April 16 when the ACC All-Stars take on a team of local players.
    ACC players expected to play include Tyler Zeller of the University of North Carolina, C.J. Williams from N.C. State, Miles Plumee of Duke plus others.
    Zeller was selected at the Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Year.
    Tickets are now on sale at Grayson County High School, Grayson County Middle School, Grayson Express and Embroidery Ville in Galax.

  • Meeting set for umpires March 15

    GALAX -- A Dixie umpire certification meeting will be held Thursday, March 15 at 6:30 pm at the Galax Recreation Center for all Galax, Carroll, and Grayson umpires.
    Anyone interested in umpiring Dixie youth or boys baseball during the summer of 2012 for the Galax Parks and Recreation Department is required to attend the meeting.
    The pay rate for umpiring each game is $25/$20 for plate/base umpires in the 8-12-year-old games and $30/$25 for plate/base umpires in the 13-18-year-old games.  

  • No. 1 ranked Oak Hill wins big

    Oak Hill made it look easy last Saturday night with a 91-64 victory over Blue Ridge School.
    The Warriors (31-0) and ranked No. 1 in the nation  in the USA Today poll, led 24-18 after the first period and were never threatened the rest of the game.
    UCLA recruit Jordan Adams led the Warriors with 20 points, including three of the team’s nine 3-pointers. He had with strong support from Georgetown signee D’Vauntes Smith-Rivera and R. J. Currington with 16 each and N.C. State recruit Tyler Lewis added 15.

  • Red Cross seeking players for...

    The Woods River Chapter of the American Red Cross will sponsor its fifth annual golf tournament at Olde Mill Golf Club in Laurel Fork on Wednesday, May 23.
    The captain’s choice format will begin with a shotgun start at 10 a.m.
    “We are so lucky to have Ellen and Jim Saunders to co-chair the tournament again this year,” said Joan Isom, chapter executive director. “We’re looking forward to another top quality event even better than last year…with lots of fun, prizes, and great food.”

  • Oak Hill girls score impressive...

    The Oak Hill Academy girls’ basketball team had a big week on the court recently, winning three games.
    The Warriors (16-5) dominated Tazewell, 70-33.
    Tazewell kept the game close in the first half and trailed 31-22 at halftime.
    But the Warriors came out of the dressing room and outscored Tazewell 24-5 in the third period to put the game away.
    Jodie Cornelie led the Warriors with 19 points, including two 3-pointers, Yacine Diop pumped in 17 and Aliyah Kilpatrick finished with 16.

  • Clanton earns LPGA card

    The granddaughter of a Grayson County couple received her Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) playing card after finishing tied for ninth in the LPGA Qualifying Tournament recently.
    Cydney Clanton of Concord, N.C., shot rounds of 72-76-70-74-71 – 363 (+3) at the 6,389-yard, par 72  Champions Course, LPGA International in Daytona Beach, Fla.,
    to receive her card.
    She is the granddaughter of Don and Ann Sharpe of Troutdale.
