Hayden Cassell of Galax and Emily Cook of Carroll County have been named Virginia High School Coaches’ Association all-stars, Carroll’s Laken Crockett was voted the Region 4D player of the year and is a first-team all-Class 4 selection while Cassell made the all-state list as a second-team all-Class 1 pick after being named an all-region first-teamer.

The VHSCA East-West All-Star game, a summer showcase for the state’s top seniors, is scheduled for July 11 in Hampton. Each team consists of 18 players chosen from all levels – Class 1 through Class 6. Cook will be the third Cavalier to play in the event in the past four years, joining Gracie Davidson and Kyndall Hiatt, and Cassell.

Cassell was Galax’s every day starting pitcher for the past two seasons after splitting time in the circle as a freshman and sophomore. The right-hander nearly reached 200 strikeouts as a senior, fanning 196 in 1292/3 innings of work. Offensively, Cassell batted .476 this past season with 22 RBIs and a pair of home runs.

Over the past three seasons, Cassell picked up 34 pitching wins and she finished her four-year varsity career with 491 strikeouts. At the plate, Cassell put together a .428 career batting average (118-for-276) with 88 RBIs and 11 home runs.
