Twelve year-old Katelynn Roberts has been competing in gymnastics for two years, already has 49 medals and two trophies

INDEPENDENCE — Gymnastics began as a childhood hobby for 12 year-old Katelynn Marie Roberts; but it is quickly gaining traction as a serious pursuit as she advances to the Regional Gymnastics Competition in Hickory, N.C. in May.
Roberts, a student at Independence Middle School, has competed in gymnastics for two years; but she has been a gymnast for half her life. To date, she has collected a total of 49 medals and two trophies in various competitions, ranging from events in North Carolina to Florida.
