INDEPENDENCE — Grayson County Summer Stage has kicked off its spring fundraiser with an online auction which runs April 15-29, 7 p.m. EST. The fundraiser is hosted by biddingowl.com.
All proceeds support the regional youth theatre program which serves Carroll, Galax, Grayson, Allegheny Counties and surrounding areas. The purpose of the program is to develop the creativity and leadership skills of young people through outstanding theatre performances for the community.
“The auction will feature a select group of Appalachian artistic works and unique experiences that represent life along the Blue Ridge Mountains of Southwest Virginia,” said board president Chris Ecker.
According to a news release from Summer Stage, Ecker and a dedicated core group of volunteers worked throughout the winter collecting items from area artists and donors. Ecker photographed and wrote descriptions in a project which he describes as a labor of love.
Shawn Martin, Summer Stage technical director, is managing the site.
Some of the featured items include a hand sewn quilt from Elva Mitchell, a rustic stool made from American wormy maple donated by master craftsman Denny Shelton, a hand-turned wooden bowl and pair of candle sticks from master woodworker Carroll Hill, and a keepsake Appalachian handmade broom in which the corn straw was grown and harvested by artist and Fries Principal John Alexander. Paintings and prints have also been contributed by native artists Penny Moseley, Shawn Martin, Penny Duvall, and Doug Martin.
“We are excited that the Carroll County High School students contributed several items to our fundraiser too,” Ecker added.
Brittany Hall donated photographs reflecting her love of the Blue Ridge area and Alexis Leonard created metal signs featuring rural life.
There are a total of 45 items to choose from and a donate button for individuals who simply want to support this regional arts program. Visit the auction online at biddingowl.com/GraysonCountySummerStage.
