  • Ruritan Club to host Spring Bazaar

     The 13th annual Spring Bazaar sponsored by the Woodlawn Ruritan Club will be held on March 5 at the VFW in Hillsville from 7:30 a.m. until 3 p.m.
    More than 65 vendors will be selling a variety of goods including yard sale items and crafts.
    Breakfast and lunch will be available to purchase.
    Among the vendors will be Chapter 1426 of the Experimental Aircraft Association who will be conducting a silent auction for an off-season week at Myrtle Beach in an oceanfront condo.

  • Stress workshop slated Feb. 17

    SPARTA, N.C. – The Alleghany Wellness Center and High Country Help Center will host a workshop, “Wiping Out Stress,” on Thursday, Feb. 17.
    The workshop will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the wellness center in Sparta.

  • Supper, auction to help Russell

    A benefit for Sharon Russell will be held at the Troutdale Fire Department on March 5.
    The spaghetti supper will be from 4-6 p.m., with an auction beginning at 6 p.m.
    Raffle tickets are on sale now with the drawing to be held the night of the benefit.

    Gold Hill Baptist Church will host a Benefit Singing for the Davis family 6 p.m. Feb. 19 at the church.
    The Davis family lost their home and belongings in a fire. Everyone is invited to attend.

  • Don’t judge a library by its cover

    Grayson County Public Library in Independence is one step closer to getting a long-awaited new roof.
    The county is considering bids to remove the existing roof and construct a new one. The county is in the process of reviewing proposals, Assistant County Administrator Mitch Smith said. A decision may be reached by next week, he said. The work would begin this spring.
    The library has needed a new roof for three to four years, said Smith, who’s leading the project.

  • Library to sponsor sweetheart contest

    SPARTA, N.C. – “Heart Month” will be celebrated in February by the Alleghany County Public Library.
    The library will honor Alleghany sweethearts.
    Couples who have been married 25 years or longer are eligible to enter the contest with the opportunity to win a special prize.
    To enter, names, date of marriage, number of years married and telephone number is needed by the library.

  • Holiday Tour of Trees winners announced

    GALAX — Twin County Regional Healthcare Foundation exceeded its goal for the third annual “Holiday Tour of Trees” fundraiser to benefit Twin County Hospice.
    More than $2,600 was raised at the Dec. 10 event.
    Local businesses, organizations and individuals sponsored 26 trees. They collected donations at a dollar per “vote,” from family, friends and patrons.
