  • Heart auction cancelled

    SPARTA, N.C. – The American Heart Association lost one of its major fund raising events recently when its annual auction on radio station WCOK was cancelled.
    The auction has been held on two Saturdays in February for the past 43 years where people called in bids on donated items.
    The radio station, which was recently sold, decided not to carry the auction.
    The new station owners consider their broadcasts a ministry.

  • Red Cross: blood supply running low

    Three blood collection drives are planned in the Twin Counties during February, as the American Red Cross experiences mounting effects of severe winter weather that caused the lowest January blood supply in a decade.
    Severe weather throughout much of the eastern half of the U.S. has caused cancellation of more than 14,000 blood and platelet donations through the American Red Cross, including more than 600 in the Appalachian region.

  • LOTTERY UPDATE-February 2, 2011

    There were no big winners in lottery drawings last weekend.
    The jackpot for tonight’s (Wednesday) Powerball drawing is $35 million, $17.6 million cash option.
    Winning Powerball numbers drawn last Saturday night were: 24-28-45-49-52 and the Powerball Number was 2.
    The Mega Millions jackpot took a hefty jump to $91 million in last night’s (Tuesday) drawing after there was no big winner in last Friday night’s drawing.
    Mega Millions numbers drawn were: 14-33-48-49-50 and the Mega Ball was 18.

  • Storytime resumes at libraries

    Libraries in Grayson County will offer winter/spring storytime beginning Feb. 8. This is a special time for pre-schoolers and their parents, grandparents, or caregivers to visit the children’s area for stories, fingerplays, music and fun.
    Storytime will be held at the Whitetop Public Library on Tuesdays at 11 a.m., the Fries Public Library on Wednesdays at 11 a.m. and the Grayson County Public Library in Independence on Thursdays at 10:30 a.m. Program flyers are available at the library and weekly themes will be listed at www.independencedeclaration.com.

  • Discount CPR classes available

    GALAX -- The Woods River Chapter of the American Red Cross has designated the third Wednesday of every month as “Small Business Day.”
    On that day companies with no more than 25 employees can request a $5 per student discount for CPR and first aid training.

  • Red Cross visits scheduled in February

    The Red Cross bloodmobile will make three visits in Galax and the Twin Counties during February.
    They include:
    Feb. 5 – First United Methodist Church, Hillsville, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.
    Feb. 24 – Epworth United Methodist Church, Cana, 1 – 6 p.m.
    Feb. 25 – Galax Elks Lodge, 1-6 p.m.

  • TCUW to host ‘Groundhog Day’ auction

    The Twin County United Way will hold its first “Groundhog Day” auction Feb. 4, to raise money to assist more than two dozen local non-profit agencies.
    The silent auction starts at 6 p.m. with the regular auction beginning at 7 p.m.  The fund-raiser is set for the Galax Elks Lodge at 800 East Stuart Drive with doors opening at 5:30 p.m.  
    All attending will receive a free “gourmet” hot dog dinner.
