  • T’Keyaha Sawyers is the recipient of Virginia Tech’s Pamplin Leader Award for 2011 at Grayson County High School.
    The Pamplin Leader is a one-year, $1,000 tuition scholarship to Virginia Tech. It is presented annually to a top student from each public high school in Virginia.
    It was established by Robert B. Pamplin Sr. (VT, class of 1933) and Robert B. Pamplin Jr., to acknowledge students with a record of outstanding academic achievement and commitment to community service and leadership experience.

  • Several Twin County residents were graduated from Radford University after the spring semester.
    Ten Galax residents also graduated from Radford University following the spring semester.
    Galax residents who earned bachelor of science degrees were: David Michael Carico, criminal justice; and John Stanley Rice, biology.

  • Providence United Methodist Church of Fries will host a musical celebration of hope and renewal at 2 p.m. Aug. 7.
    Different groups will sing. Refreshments provided. Everything is free.
     

  • Rock Creek Cemetery near Independence will hold decoration 2 p.m. Aug. 7.
    Everyone is welcome.
     

  • The Grayson County Relay for Life will be held July 29-30 in the Fries Ballpark from 6 p.m. -2 a.m. Theme is “The Wonderful World of Disney!”
    Activities include games, a kid’s walk, special dancing, survivor/caregiver lap, team lap, car racing, male beauty contest, a luminaria service, fireworks and more.
    There will be polish sausages, nachos, walking tacos, pinto beans and cornbread, slaw, snow cones, fried candy bars, and baked goods.

  • “Making A Splash With Jesus” is the theme for Vacation Bible School on July 30 at Coal Creek Community Church.
    Water activities and a 100-foot water slide are planned. Hours are 10 a.m.-3 p.m.

  • “Jesus Jam In The Park,” will be at 5:30 p.m. Aug. 6 in the park beside Big Daddy’s in Fries.
    The praise and worship event is sponsored by Youth Pastor Chuck Edwards from Turkey Knob Church.
    Special singing by Terry Semones. Special dramas by “Jesus Freaks” from Liberty Hill Church, “Chosen Generation” from Atkins Church, “Vessels Of Judah” from Turkey Knob Church.
    Testimonial experiences will be described by youth.
