    ENNICE, N.C. -- Bonnie Evon Johnson, 65, of Ennice, died June 29, 2009, at Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta.

    She was the daughter of the late Carlie and Ada Evans Johnson.

    She is survived by three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Nina Eller of Laurel Springs, N.C., Wilma and Wayne Laws of Statesville, N.C., Dorothy and Clyde Nickelson of Millers Creek, N.C.; one brother and sister-in-law, Rex and Helen Johnson of Sparta; and several nieces and nephews.

  • Earl Blankenship

    GALAX -- H. Earl Blankenship, 88, of Galax, died June 28, 2009 at his residence.

    He was born Dec. 24, 1920 in Wythe County, Va., to the late William and Lora Cannoy Blankenship.

    He was preceded in death by his wife, Bertie Lee Blankenship.

    He is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Lora and Harry Frost and Velva and Dennis Bullins, all of Galax; one son and daughter-in-law, Wayne and Martha Blankenship of New Canton, Va.; 11 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

  • Ethel B. Farmer

    WAYNESBORO -- Ethel Bircham Farmer, 95, of Waynesboro, and formerly of Fries, died July 1, 2009 at Saint Luke’s in Waynesboro.

    She was born May 14, 1914 in Virginia to Aaron Fulton and Mary Wickam Webb Bircham. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by husband, Samuel R. Farmer and her son, Sparky Farmer.

    She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Glenda F. and Bill Cregger of Salem; son and daughter-in-law, Louis A. and Jean Farmer of Waynesboro; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

  • Ray Roberts

    Ray Allen Roberts, 58, of Wake Forest, N.C., died June 29, 2009 in Raleigh, NC.

    He was born September 10, 1950, in Virginia to Bishop and Hazel Catron Roberts.

    He is survived by his wife, Pam Roberts; daughter, Shonda Williams, both of Wake Forest, N.C.; sisters, Shelby Montgomery of Woodlawn and Sherry Combs of Sparta, N.C.; two grandchildren; a mother-in-law, Lois Vaught of Wake Forest, N.C.; and special cousin Tommy Roberts.

    Funeral services were held July 3 in Vaughan-Guynn Chapel with Rev. Garry Adams officiating. Burial followed in Bishops Chapel Cemetery.

    Gene Walker Welch, 75, of Galax, passed away July 5, 2009 at his home in Carroll County. He was born Sept. 23, 1933 to the late Robert and Florence Edna Welch. He is preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Paschal Ewart Welch and Clarence J. Welch.

    Harry L. Anders, 64, of the Comers Rock community of Elk Creek, died July 1, 2009 at his residence.

    He was born Aug. 26, 1944, in Fries, to the late Thomas J. and Bessie Pruitt Anders.

    He is survived by his wife Sybil Cornett Anders, of the home; son and spouse, Brian and Rhonda Anders, Dillon, S.C.; two grandchildren; two brothers and a spouse, Newton and Mary Lou Anders, Kinston, N.C., and Dean Anders, Fries; one sister and spouse, Juanita and Robert Lanter, Buena Vista; and several nieces and nephews.

    Ethel Virginia Isom McBride, 93, of Galax, died July 4, 2009 at home.

    She was born April 23, 1916 in Carroll County to James Alexander and Alverta Carico Isom. She was preceded in death by her husband, William McBride.

  • Lucille McWatters

    OCALA, FLA. -- Lucille Byrd McWatters,85, of Ocala, Fla., formerly of Independence, Va. died July 4, 2009 in Ocala.

    She was the widow of Rev. John McWatters. She was born Sept. 22, 1923 at Teas, Va., to the late John and Clyde Hash Byrd.

    She is survived by one son and spouse, John and Ann McWatters of Ocala; two grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

    Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. July 11 in Carmi Baptist Church, Camp, Va. with burial following in Blue Springs Cemetery. Rev. Kenny Price will officiate.

    She was born Jan. 3,1920 in Grayson County to Eli Richard and Florence Porter Shupe. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Elmer Freeman and daughter Vickie Lynn Funk.
