  • Main Street Auto Spa opens

    Jerry Perry debuted on the business scene in Independence in 2008 when he purchased the Dutch-Mundy Chevrolet building on Main Street and opened Main Street Tire & Auto.
    He has been pleased with the support from the community and recently added two new businesses – Main Street Auto Spa #1 and #2.
    “I had the opportunity to buy the car washes and felt it would be a good investment,” Perry said.
    The car washes are located on U.S. 21 north and Main Street beside Aunt Bea’s.

  • Grayson going green

    Since the Grayson County Board of Supervisors embarked on a Green Government Initiative in September 2009, the board has been making significant advancements toward their goals of innovatively reducing the local government’s overall impact on the environment and improving the efficiency of government in order to reduce costs and save money, officials reported.
    The latest component of the board’s initiative will be to upgrade the Grayson County Courthouse with green technologies and energy efficient equipment.  

  • Appalachian Power Co. gets far less of an increase than requested

    The Virginia State Corporation Commission has substantially reduced the base rate increase sought by Appalachian Power Co. in a recent ruling that meets a legislative deadline.
    The ruling, in combination with a drop in a separate charge, will lower the average residential customer‘s monthly electric bill.
    The commission cut nearly $93 million from Appalachian’s requested base rate increase of $154 million.

  • Vaughan-Bassett announces expansion, jobs

    GALAX – Vaughan-Bassett Furniture officials announced last week plans to spend $1 million over the next several months on a four-phase expansion of its Galax factory.

    Wyatt Bassett, Vaughan-Bassett’s president and CEO, said the most expensive phase of the expansion is a new 16,000 square-foot building that is under construction at the rear of the shipping facility on Oldtown Street.

    The other three phases include:

    • Relocating the two bed lines from the machine room to the pack room, which was completed last month.
