  • Suspect arrested in 58 Grocery burglary

    BAYWOOD — A man has been arrested in connection with the recent burglary of 58 Grocery in Baywood.
    According to a report from the Grayson County Sheriff’s Office, Deputy Mico Davis discovered that the shop, located at 10009 Grayson Parkway, was burglarized during a business check on Feb. 7. Davis alerted dispatch and Deputies, Eric Testerman and Brandon Phillips arrived to assist in clearing the business.

  • Prosecutor says pair plotted to kill teen

    Two Virginia Tech students charged with killing a Blacksburg teen and disposing of her body near Galax plotted the crime together, according to testimony at a Feb. 2 bond hearing in Christiansburg.
    Nicole Lovell, 13, was killed and her body found on Jan. 30 off Route 89 in North Carolina, about seven miles south of Galax and just 1.25 miles over the border from Grayson County.

  • Grand jury indicts 14

    INDEPENDENCE — A list of 24 indictments against 14 individuals from the Grayson County Circuit Court grand jury were released last Thursday by the Grayson County Circuit Court.
    Charges during this session included several charges of drug possession and distribution, as well as charges of child abuse, statutory burglary and the assault of a police officer.
    Arley Jason Simpkins, included in the list of indicted persons, received two charges including the distribution of marijuana and assault of a law enforcement officer.

  • Harper murder trial set for July

    INDEPENDENCE — A new trial date has been set for George Albert Harper III of Galax, who has been charged with the 2002 first-degree murder of Brandon Billings.
    According to the Grayson County Circuit Court, Harper’s trial date has been set for the week of July 25.
    The trial date was originally set for the week of Feb. 8, but it has been continued, according to the court system.

  • Sparta man facing drunk in public, drug charges

    A Sparta, N.C., man was arrested Dec. 9 and charged with drunk in public, possession of a schedule II controlled substance, possession of a schedule IV controlled substance and possession of marijuana, according to Galax Police Department report.
    Officer Drew Bobbitt was dispatched to a business located on East Stuart Drive in Galax to investigate an impaired customer. Bobbitt arrested Chris Michael White, 22, who is alleged to have been intoxicated during a search incident to his arrest, when Bobbitt discovered the controlled substances and marijuana.

  • Murder suspect charged with perjury

    A Galax man facing a murder charge in the 2002 death of a Galax High School student has been indicted for perjury by a Grayson County Circuit Court grand jury.
    George Albert Harper III, 42, is being held in the New River Valley Regional Jail in Dublin on two charges, first-degree murder in the 2002 Brandon Billings murder case and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.

  • Former prisoner indicted on assault charges

    A former prisoner at River North Correction Center in Independence was recently indicted by a Grayson County Circuit Court grand jury for allegedly assaulting two corrections officers.
    The grand jury met in Independence on Oct. 23 and returned several sealed indictments.
    One of the indictments recently opened was against Marcus Allen Whitehead, 30, whose address is now listed as Wallens Ridge State Prison in Big Stone Gap.
    He is charged with two counts of assault on a law officer.

    Sealed indictments have been opened against three Mouth of Wilson residents indicting them on drug charges.
    The Grayson County Circuit Court grand jury met Oct. 23 and indicted several people. Some of the indictments were sealed.
    Benjamin Ted Roten, 46, was indicted on one charge for the possession of a schedule I controlled substance (LSD).
    Other indictments included:
    Benjamin Wayne Roten, 23, for the possession of a schedule I controlled substance (LSD).

  • Former bookkeeper faces charges

    A former secretary/bookkeeper at Grayson County High School has been indicted on embezzlement and forgery charges by a Grayson County Circuit Court grand jury.
    The grand jury met Oct. 23 and issued several sealed indictments which included six charges against Shelia Wood Anderson, 38, of Mouth of Wilson. The indictments against Anderson were unsealed last Friday.
