  • Drug traffickers sentenced in federal court

    Two local drug task forces have reported the sentencing of several major drug traffickers as a result of an ongoing federal investigation being conducted in Southwest Virginia and Western North Carolina.     

  • Grayson Grand Jury indicts 16

    A Grayson County Circuit Court grand jury returned a variety of indictments against 16 people last Friday.
    James Edward Lawrence, 33, of Galax, was indicted for obtaining money by fraud. He was charged earlier this year for allegedly collecting bounty money on coyotes killed outside Grayson County.
    According to the indictment, between Jan. 6, 2015 and Feb. 25, 2015, Lawrence received more than $200 from Grayson County.
    Independence attorney Jonathon Venzie has been appointed to represent Lawrence.

  • Prisoners indicted by Grand Jury

    Two prisoners at River North Correctional Center in Independence have been indicted by a Grayson County Circuit Court grand jury for charges that allegedly occurred inside the prison.
    The grand jury, meeting July 24, returned several sealed indictments. The names were released following their arrests.
    Davin Michael Preston, 24, was indicted for a prisoner tampering or damaging fire protection equipment within the correctional facility.

  • Jury finds woman not guilty of embezzling

    A Galax woman was found not guilty of two charges of embezzlement from the Baywood Rescue Squad following a jury trial in Grayson County Circuit Court last Friday.
    Nancy Lane Christman was charged in January by a Grayson County Circuit Court grand jury with embezzling funds from the volunteer rescue squad.
    According to Circuit Court Clerk Susan Herrington, the case was brought before a jury on Oct. 24-25. Herrington said the trial ended around 9:30 p.m. last Friday.

  • Grayson Grand Jury Indicts nine

    A Lansing, N.C., man was indicted by a Grayson County Circuit Court grand jury on five charges.
    The indictments against Jamie Matthew Eldreth, 35, were among the sealed indictments handed down by the grand jury that met July 24.
    Eldreth was indicted for elude police, disregard to stop; reckless driving; drive on a suspended license; failure to display proper tag; defective equipment.

  • Murder trial set for next year

    A trial date has been set for George Albert Harper III of Galax, who has been charged with the 2002 first-degree murder of Brandon Billings.
    According to the Grayson County Circuit Court, Harper’s trial date has been set for the week of Feb. 8, 2016. The jury trial will span the entire week.

  • Grayson attorney confirms investigation of school funds

    Grayson Commonwealth’s Attorney Doug Vaught on Friday confirmed that he has been consulted “regarding allegations involving the Grayson County School system,” specifically financial records and accounting.
    Vaught said in a statement sent to local newspapers that an investigation is underway.

  • Murder trial date postponed until August

    A jury trial date for George Albert Harper III of Galax, who is charged with the first-degree murder of Brandon Billings, will not be set until August, according to the Grayson County Circuit Court.
    Harper is the second suspect to face a jury trial for the murder of Billings; a crime that took place in Grayson County nearly 13 years ago. According to police reports, Billings, a Galax High School senior and a member of the football team, was found shot to death in his truck near the New River.

  • Grand jury indicts 21

    INDEPENDENCE – A Sparta, N.C., man was indicted by a Grayson County Circuit Court grand jury last Friday on charges involving child pornography.

    Harrison Leland Edwards, 24, was indicted for soliciting a child through use of a communications system and soliciting or production child pornography.

  • Independence man pleads guilty to child porn charges

    A 25 year-old Independence man recently entered a plea of guilt to multiple counts of possession, reproduction and distribution of child pornography in Grayson County.
    According to a report from Grayson County Sheriff Richard Vaughan, David “Andrew” Austin, 25, of Independence, appeared before the Grayson County Circuit Court on April 30 to answer child pornography charges.
