  • Underwood sentenced in dog attack case

    INDEPENDENCE – The atmosphere inside the Grayson County Circuit court was emotional last Thursday during the sentencing of John Terry Underwood II, 52, of Independence, who was charged in connection with the dog mauling death of a 15-month-old girl on the night of Jan. 6, 2016.

  • Suspect in shooting death scheduled for three-day jury trial

    INDEPENDENCE – A trial date has been set for Greyling Dwayne “Beany” Davis, who is charged in the 2016 shooting death of his ex-girlfriend.
    According to the circuit court database, Davis is scheduled for a three-day jury trial, beginning August 23.
    Davis was indicted on four charges by a Grayson County Circuit Court grand jury in January: kill and murder, malicious shooting, possession of a firearm after having been convicted of a violent crime and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony – subsequent offense.

  • Two indicted on breaking and entering charges

    INDEPENDENCE – A Grayson County Circuit Court grand jury returned 10 indictments against a Galax man and a Rich Creek woman in connection with the alleged breaking and entering of a home in the Baywood community on April 19.
    The grand jury met April 28 and issued 117 indictments against 64 suspects. Several of the indictments were sealed.
    Indictments are unsealed once arrests are made.

  • Jury trial set for Connell

    INDEPENDENCE — Terra Lynn Connell, charged in the 2016 dog attack death of a 15 month-old girl, has been scheduled for a two-day jury trial in Grayson County Circuit Court on Oct. 5 and 6.
    The trial date was set last Friday by the court system, a day later than previously planned due to scheduling conflicts.

  • Sealed indictments opened; three charged

    INDEPENDENCE – Six more sealed indictments issued by a Grayson County Circuit Court grand jury that met in Independence on April 28 have been opened.
    Indictments were sealed until the suspects were arrested.
    Three indictments were handed down against Brian James Hayes of Whitetop. They included: one count for the grand larceny of a firearm; one count for larceny with the intent to sell stolen property; and one count for the possession of a firearm after having been convicted of a felony.

  • Circuit Court Clerk receives positive audit

    The Grayson County Circuit Court Clerk’s office recently received positive results from a completed audit of the county’s court system, which confirm that no deficiencies were found in the system from the January 2016 through March 31.
    Hon. Susan M. Herrington, Clerk of the Circuit Court for Grayson County, recently shared two pieces of correspondence regarding the completion of the audit with the Declaration.

  • Fries men sentenced for gun crime

    INDEPENDENCE — Two Fries men were sentenced in Grayson County Circuit Court this year, in a case related to stolen firearms from a Fries residence.
    On January 31, Eric Lawson appeared in Circuit Court and pled guilty to misdemeanor larceny. He received a 12 month suspended jail sentence and was ordered to pay restitution to the victim.

  • Gilliam sentenced in 2018 Fries shooting

    INDEPENDENCE — John Ford Gilliam of Woodlawn pleaded guilty to two amended charges, in the July 14, 2018 shooting of a Fries man, in Grayson County Circuit Court on Feb. 28.
    Thursday’s hearing was the second scheduled hearing for Gilliam’s plea; rescheduled from Thursday, Jan. 24. Gilliam was initially charged with two felonies: malicious wounding and use of a firearm in commission of a felony (first offense). The charges were amended to unlawful wounding and reckless handling of a firearm (misdemeanor).

    INDEPENDENCE - A new hearing was set in Grayson County Circuit Court on Thursday for John Ford Gilliam of Woodlawn, who is charged in the July 14, 2018 malicious shooting of a Fries man.
