    GALAX – Sherrill Britt rolled in a birdie putt on the 17th hole to break a 3-way tie for first place and win the annual Member-Member, Member-Guest golf tournament held at Blue Ridge Country Club in Galax recently.

    The granddaughter of a Grayson County couple won her first professional golf tournament June 23, but it took seven playoff holes to do it.

    Cydney Clanton, the granddaughter of Don and Anne Sharpe of Troutdale, recently won the Four Wins Invitational on the Symetra Tour played in South Bend, Ind.

  • Putt-off determines golf tourney winners

    ENNICE, N.C. – A putt-off determined the first place winner of the annual Baywood Ruritan Golf Tournament held May 25 at Crestview Golf Course in Ennice.

    Two teams tied at 14-under par with the putt-off determining the winner.

  • Bryant follows family tradition by winning Region C golf title

    The grandson of two Independence residents recently won the Virginia High School League Group A golf championship in a tournament played at Lonesome Pine Country Club in Big Stone Gap.

  • Blue Devils golfers compete in Region C

    Four Grayson County Blue Devils competed in the Region C golf tournament at Draper Valley Golf Course last Wednesday.

    Sophomore Jacob Vaughan led the pack with an 81, followed by Cole Davis with an 84, Tucker Phipps 89 and Hank Choate 101 at the par 72 course.

  • Blue Devil golfers qualify for Region C tournament

    Two strokes doesn’t sound like much in golf but it was enough to beat the Galax Maroon Tide in the Mountain Empire District golf tournament played last Monday at Draper Valley Golf Course.

    Graham claimed first place with 335 points while the Tide finished with 337.

    Grayson County was third with 360 points and Fort Chiswell was fourth with 397.

    The Tide had won 11 consecutive MED golf championships.

    Galax senior golfer John Bryant was medalist with a 3-over-par 75.

    24 golfers from four schools competed in the tournament.

  • Blue Devils golfers beat Tide, Cavaliers

    The Grayson County Blue Devil golf team handed the Galax Maroon Tide a rare defeat in a golf match played last Thursday at New River Country Club.

    The Blue Devils won the Mountain Empire District match with a 181, followed by Carroll County with 190 and Galax 191.

    Hank Choate claimed medalist honors for the Blue Devils with a 7-over 43.

    Tucker Phipps was a stroke behind at 44 while Cole Davis shot a 46, Dylan Isom 48, Jacob Vaughan 49 and Danny Debord 51.

  • Britt wins BRCC Invitational tournament by seven shots

    GALAX – Shirl Britt came from four shots behind on Sunday, Aug. 12 to win the 46th annual Blue Ridge Country Club Invitational.

    Britt, from West End, N.C., the defending champion, shot a 3-under 67 in Saturday’s round and then shot a 7-under 63 for a 129 total for the easy seven shot victory.

    Second place went to Frank McBayer of Hillsville, who shot rounds of 69-67 – 136. Third place went to Brad Chambers of Galax, with rounds of 68-69 – 137.

  • Blue Devils finish second in golf tournament

    LAUREL FORK – Grayson County finished second last Tuesday in a three-team golf match played at Olde Mill Golf Course.

    The Galax Maroon Tide took first place with 178 points, followed by Grayson with 184 and Carroll County with 194.

    Jacob Vaughan led the Blue Devils with a 42 followed by Tucker Phipps and Dylan Isom, 45; Danny Debord, 52; Cole Davis and Gavin Bailey, 54.

    John Bryant led the Maroon Tide with a 39. Dominic DeGiacoma shot a 45, Caleb Pack and Patton both shot a 48 and Nick Sage had a 50.

  • Blue Devils golfers finish third

    SPARTA, N.C. – The Grayson County Blue Devils finished third in a Mountain Empire District golf match played at New River Country Club last Thursday.

    Graham won first place with a 343, Galax second with 350, Grayson 375 and Fort Chiswell 401.

    Tucker Phipps and Dylan Isom led the Blue Devils, each shooting a 91. Other Grayson players – Jacob Vaughan, Cole Davis, Gavin Bailey, 95; Danny Debord 98.
