  • Two Grayson County wrestlers win region championships

    DANVILLE -- Two Grayson County Blue Devil wrestlers won championships in their respective weight categories last week in the Group 2A West regional tournament conducted in Danville.

    Sophomore Brant Cummins won the 113-pound category when he scored a 7-3 decision over Mark Deahl of Union. Cummins upped his season record to 26-8.

    Jose Sanchez, with a 26-10 season record, won the 132 pound weight category when he pinned Trevor Shupe of Central-Wise in 5:45.

  • Alleghany boys basketball team soars to 17-2, 11-1 MVC

    SPARTA, N.C. – Tyler Hanks stepped into the spotlight for Alleghany last Friday night to lead the Trojans to a 75-37 boys basketball victory over East Wilkes in a Mountain-Valley Conference game.

    East Wilkes had won only three games this season but it played solid basketball in the first quarter and trailed 16-13 at the end of the period.

    Alleghany turned the big guns loose on the visitors in the next three quarters and combined with its pressure defense, East Wilkes couldn’t stop the Trojan Express.

  • Allegany hoop boys shine in twin Mountain-Valley 2-A/1-A blowouts

    SPARTA, N.C. – Alleghany continued to overpower its opponents last week with a pair of Mountain-Valley 2-A/1-A blowouts.

    Austin Sprinkle scored 17 points last Friday night (Jan. 30) to lead the Trojans to a 59-38 victory over Elkin.

    The Trojans (15-2, 9-1 MVC) took a comfortable 28-11 lead at halftime and cruised to the easy win.

    Sprinkle also had seven steals.

    Fabian Santos had a well-rounded game with 8 points, five assists and 13 rebounds.

    Elkin (3-14, 2-8 MVC) was led by Ras Walker with 14 points.

  • Alleghany hoop boys stay undefeated against conference foes

    SPARTA, N.C. – Alleghany remained unbeaten in the Mountain-Valley 2-A/1-A Conference last Friday night with a 59-49 victory over West Wilkes.

    The Blackhawks scored the first nine points of the game before Alleghany put its offense in gear. The Trojans (11-1, 5-0 MVC) came back with a vengeance and scored the next 20 points to take a 30-18 lead at halftime.

    Wilkes made another run at the Trojans in the fourth period, cutting the deficit to 52-49 with 2:12 to play, but the Trojans used some timely free throw shooting to put the win away.

  • Grayson hoop girls defeat Galax, 47-30

    INDEPENDENCE -- Galax coach Yerrick Stoneman surmised that had his club hit a few more shots, he might have gotten Grayson County coach Tiny Funk a little worried.

    Funk didn’t need any help.

    “You know how rivalry games are,” Funk said after his Blue Devils pulled away from the Maroon Tide for a 47-30 Jan. 9 Mountain Empire District win. “Yerrick had his kids prepared and they did a good job defensively.”

  • Allegahany hoop boys defeat Galax, 62-57

    SPARTA, N.C. -- Clif Conley of Galax and Austin Sprinkle of Alleghany put on a shooting show last Friday night but when the smoke cleared, the Trojans came away with a hard-fought 62-57 nondistrict victory.

    Conley finished with 33 points and Sprinkle had 29 to keep fans on the edge of their seats.

    The Trojans opened up a 16-10 lead after the first period and increased it to 27-20 at halftime.

    The Maroon Tide trimmed two points off the lead in the third period to trail 45-40 going to the final period.

  • Grayson County hoop girls soar to 5-0 record

    INDEPENDENCE -- Grayson County fought off a sluggish start last Tuesday night and rolled to a 61-45 victory over Richlands in a non-district girls basketball game.

    Richlands found early scoring success and took a 12-10 lead after the first period.

    The undefeated Blue Devil girls (5-0) fought back with a vengeance.

    After taking an 18-17 lead, Taylor Cannaday buried a 3-pointer to give the Blue Devils some breathing room.

  • Grayson's Camryn McGrady surpasses 1,000-point hoops milestone

    INDEPENDENCE -- The suspense is over.

    Camryn McGrady of the Grayson County Blue Devils surpassed the 1,000 point mark Dec. 12 en route to a 56-26 victory over nondistrict rival Alleghany.

    McGrady entered the game 10 points short of the 1,000 mark. She had scored 8 points when she was fouled with 1:55 left in the half. She calmly went to the foul line and sank both shots to reach the plateau.

  • Grayson County hoop boys create new identity

    INDEPENDENCE -- In the past four years, the Grayson County boys basketball program has produced five 1,000-point scorers. The Blue Devils success this year may depend on how well they can do on the other end of the floor.

    Though fielding a team that lacks in star power, eighth-year Grayson County head coach Lucas Austin likes what he sees from 11 young men who are similar in size, ability and toughness.
